Waynesville, Ohio ~ Connections with the Past

Samuel Heighway from Shropshire, England founded Waynesville, Ohio in 1797. His settlement was honed out of the woods and clung tenaciously to the side of a steep hill overlooking the flood plain of the meandering Little Miami River. It was a tiny hamlet of a few log cabins and a tavern encircled by a dense and undisturbed wilderness. However, Waynesville’s growth, and the settlement of the surrounding area, would be phenomenal during its first decade due to the influx of pioneers.

Jo Stump ~ Help Us Find Out More About Him

"Jo Stump" is written on the reverse

We don't know much about this young man pictured above. He was born around 1841. We think he is one of the two sons of Horatio and Emily Stump of Warren County, Massie Township, Ohio; the other son being Wesley. "Jo" lived with his parents on the farm up at least till 1870. By 1880, however, Horatio and Emily are living by themsleves in Massie Township. It is most likely that this Stump family is related to the Jonas Stump and family of Harveysburg thorugh common grandparents

I am the genealogy librarian at The Mary L. Cook Public Library in Waynesville, Ohio. I am interested in all aspects of our local history but my special interest is in mid-western Quaker history and genealogy. The history of Waynesville, Ohio is a microcosm of American history. Waynesville was a town made up of a diverse group of pioneers and its development paralleled the diversity, the struggles and the growth of the United States. I am also interested in the history and culture of other local towns, villages and hamlets in the area, for example, Harveysburg, Ohio. AND, as you can also tell from my blog, "Conversations with my Cats", I love cats!!
